What Is Low Voltage Wiring?
The Wiring Behind
Every Smart Home System
Low voltage wiring is any cabling that carries data, audio, video, or control signals rather than standard electrical power. It’s the foundation underneath every smart home, security system, and enterprise network.
When it’s done right, your cameras never drop, your WiFi reaches every corner, your alarm system runs clean, and everything works exactly as it should — invisibly and reliably. When it’s done wrong, you spend years dealing with dead zones, signal drops, and cable runs that look like spaghetti.
ProTECHt has been running low voltage cable in Indianapolis homes and businesses since 2012. Every run is clean, every cable is labeled, and every job is done to last.
Low Voltage Includes:
- Cat5e / Cat6 / Cat6a ethernet cabling
- Security camera wiring (POE)
- Alarm system sensor wiring
- WiFi access point drops
- Smart home device wiring
- Pre-wiring new construction
- Structured cabling systems
💡 Best time to wire
The best time to run cable is before the drywall goes up. If you’re building or remodeling, call us before your contractor closes the walls it costs a fraction of what it does after.

Common Questions
Low Voltage Wiring
FAQ
Do I need low voltage wiring if I already have WiFi?
WiFi is convenient but has real limitations — especially for security cameras, gaming, home offices, and devices that need consistent high-speed connections. Hardwired Ethernet is always faster and more reliable than wireless. We recommend WiFi for mobile devices and Ethernet for anything stationary or mission-critical.
Can you run cable in a finished home without damaging walls?
Yes, most of the time. We route cable through attic spaces, crawl spaces, and existing wall cavities. Most installs in finished homes require minimal or zero drywall repair. We’ll be upfront during the walkthrough if your home has specific limitations.
What's the difference between Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6a?
Cat5e handles up to 1Gbps fine for basic internet. Cat6 handles up to 10Gbps and is what we recommend for all new installs. Cat6a is for runs over 180 feet or enterprise environments requiring maximum performance. We install Cat6 as standard on all residential jobs.
Can you pre-wire my home currently under construction?
Absolutely this is the ideal time. Pre-wiring during framing means cables run cleanly inside the walls, all terminations are hidden, and the finished look is completely professional. The cost is significantly lower than retrofitting after drywall. Call us early in the build process and we’ll coordinate with your builder.
Do you serve areas outside Indianapolis?
Yes, we serve all of Indianapolis and surrounding suburbs, including Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, Westfield, Zionsville, Brownsburg, Avon, Greenwood, and all of Hamilton, Hendricks, Johnson, and Hancock counties.
